Course objectives

The purpose of this course is to orient the participants to the initial assessment and management of the trauma patient.
 
Upon completion of the ATLS Student Course, the participant will be able to:
A. Demonstrate concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessment
B. Establish management priorities in a trauma situation
C. Initiate primary and secondary management necessary within the "golden hour" for the emergency care of acute life-threatening emergencies
D. Demonstrate, in a given simulated clinical and surgical skills practicum, the following skills used in the initial assessment and management of patients with multiple injuries.

Course description

The ATLS Student Course emphasizes the rapid initial assessment and primary management of the injured patient, starting at the time of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving intervention, reevaluation, stabilization and when needed, transfer to a trauma center. The course consists of pre- and postcourse tests, core content lectures, interactive case presentations, discussions, development of life-saving skills, practical laboratory experiences, and a final performance proficiency evaluation.
 
Based on well-established principles and objectives of trauma management, the course is intended to provide the doctor with one acceptable method for safe, immediate management and the basic knowledge necessary to:
 
  1. Assess the patient's condition rapidly and accurately.
  2. Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority.
  3. Determine if the patient's needs exceed a facility's capabilities.
  4. Arrange appropriately for the patient's interhospital or intrahospital tranfer.
  5. Assure that optimum care is provided.
 
Faculty for the ATLS Student Course are all qualified swiss ATLS Instructors. Enrollment is limited to 16 students.
 
Courses will be given in German, French or Italian, however, the Course documents are in English only.

The course is open to all certified doctors interested in enhancing their initial management of the trauma patient.

  • Swiss Society for Anesthesia (SGAR/SSAR) 20 points
  • Swiss Society for Orthopedic Surgery (SGO/SSO) 20 points
  • Swiss Society for Internal Medicine (SGIM/SSMI) 20 hours

Fees

CHF 2'000.-- course material, administration costs, lunches, beverages and a course dinner is included. Accommodation is not included and has to be organized and paid by each participant individually.

Registration

As the Course place is limited to 16 persons, we cannot guarantee definitive participation. Confirmation of participation will be made on a "first come - first serve" basis after receipt of the course fee. If a given course is already full you can still try to join the waiting list as sometime vacancies due to cancellation sometimes happen.
 
A maximum of 2 foreign particpants can be considered for each course. This rule applies only to those who are working and living outside Switzerland.

Four weeks prior to the Course at the latest you will receive all Course documents, however, only if payment has been received.

three weeks after the online registration the latest. Failure of payment of the course fee will result in loss of reservation in loss of priority for a course place.
 
Cancellation policy
 
Cancellation must be received by e-mail or by registered letter at the ATLS Secretariat eight weeks before the beginning of the course the latest. Cancellation by phone is not acceptable. A cancellation fee of CHF 100.-- will charged.
 
Written cancellation received at the ATLS Secretariat less than eight weeks before the beginning of the course will be charged the full course fee of CHF 2'000.--. It is strongly recommended to insure against unforeseen and forced cancellation (illness, accident, etc.) www.elviatravel.ch
