Short Description:
The ATLS Student Course emphasizes rapid initial assessment and primary management of the injured patient, starting at the time of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving interventions, reevaluation, and stabilization. Upon completion of the course, doctors should feel confident in implementing the skills taught in the ATLS Student Course.

The ATLS Student Course is a continuing medical education program designed for physicians.
Course Fees:
CHF 2000 which includes all course materials, administrative costs, lunches, beverages, and a course dinner. Accommodation is not included and will have to be arranged and paid by participants.
Registration:
As course places are limited to 16, definitive acceptance in a course is on a ‘first come, first served basis’. Participation will only be confirmed after receipt of course fees. If a given course is already booked out, we strongly suggest joining the waiting list as occasional cancellations occur.
Schedules:
Course manuals and the relevant documents will be sent four weeks prior to the course (provided payment has been received).
Language:
Depending on the students and the faculty the course might be performed in English.

Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to orient the participants to the initial assessment and management of the trauma patient.
Upon completion of the ATLS Student Course, the participant will be able to:
A. Demonstrate the concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessment
B. Establish management priorities in a trauma situation
C. Initiate the necessary primary and secondary management within the ‘golden hour’ for the emergency care of acute life-threatening situations
D. Demonstrate, in a given simulated clinical and surgical skills practical, the skills necessary for the initial assessment and management of patients with multiple injuries
Course Description
The ATLS Student Course emphasizes rapid initial assessment and primary management of the injured patient, starting at the time of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving intervention, reevaluation, stabilization, and, when needed, transfer to a trauma center. The course consists of pre- and post-course tests, core content lectures, interactive case presentations, discussions, development of life-saving skills, practical skills stations, and a final performance proficiency evaluation.
Based on well-established trauma management principles and objectives, the course is intended to provide physicians with a method for safe, immediate management and the basic knowledge necessary to:
1. Assess the patient’s condition rapidly and accurately
2. Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority
3. Determine whether that patient’s needs exceed a facility’s capabilities
4. Make appropriate arrangements for the patient’s interhospital or intrahospital transfer
5. Ensure that optimal care is provided in each phase
The faculty for the ATLS Student Course consists entirely of qualified ATLS Instructors. Enrollment is limited to 16 students.
